STORY BEHIND THE COFFEE

Ali Subaih, 65, entered the coffee growing community when he was 20 years old. He fondly remembers his father, beside whom he learnt the tips, tricks and tools of coffee production. After his passing, Ali and his brother took over the full responsibility of the farm, which is about 250 Libna San’ani, 1 Libna = 44 sq meters.

As of today, their sons have grown up and stand beside Ali and his brother, as the two pass on their collective wisdom to the young ones. They grow a small amount of grain in addition to coffee.

Ali’s advice echoes that of his Yemeni peers in the coffee landscape: “Pay close attention to agriculture, particularly to coffee cultivation. Use natural fertilisers and ensure a steady, reliant supply of water.”

His parting are deeply personal. “Coffee is the wealth of all Yemenis. It has supported me in my illness and my happiness, and I will never stop growing it.”
